MIDDLE CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES
MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS: GRADES 3 / 4.
This week students looked at the origins of Mothers' Day. In 1870 American writer Julia Ward Howe appealed to women to unite and bring peace throughout the world.
She proposed that a Mothers' Day for peace be commemorated every year in June.
In 1924 after World War 1, Mothers' Day was first held in Australia. Sydney woman Janet Heyden started the tradition after being concerned for lonely and forgotten mothers in hospital. In the busy world of 2023, families often try to spend time on (or close to) the 2nd Sunday in May, together.
